At the end of a country lane leading only to the village, lies Durisdeer, nestling at the foot of the Lowther Hills, with an historic church, housing one of the finest sculptures in Scotland. Hope Cottage sits within Durisdeer and makes the perfect place to relax and unwind. Durisdeer is within easy reach of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayr, Carlisle (all 60 miles distant) and Dumfries (20 miles).The small country town of Thornhill lies 5 miles to the south and boasts many interesting shops, eating places and an 18 hole golf course.
Thornhill has been called the "Duke's Village" because of its lenghty connection with the Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry who have resided at Drumlanrig Castle for 300 years. The castle, just 3 miles away, is open to the public during the summer and has many attractions including a craft centre, bicycle hire and repair, mapped woodland walks and mountain bike trails, an adventure playground and tearoom.
A variety of activities are available in the locality including mountain biking at Drumlanrig and the 7 Stanes trails of Ae Forest and Mabie, walking on the nearby Southern Upland Way, pony trekking, swimming, golf, squash, fishing and shooting.
The beautiful unspoilt countryside is ideal for hill walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.
