Drumlanrig Castle, ThornhillDrumlanrig Castle and Country Park, just 3 miles away, is open to the public during the summer and has many attractions including a craft centre, bicycle hire, mapped woodland walks, an adventure playground and tea room. The castle itself houses many great art treasures and is well worth a visit.

The village of Wanlockhead (10 miles north) is Scotland's highest village. Here you will find the Museum of Lead Mining, which shows artefacts of the trade as well as an insight into the lifestyle of the miners. You will also have the opportunity to take a guided tour down the Lochnell Mine to experience the conditions first hand! Gold and silver mining were also common here and gold panning still goes on today in some of the peaty burns that roll off the hills.

Robert Burns Statue, Dumfries Dumfries our nearest town (18 miles south) lies beside the River Nith. Known as the "Queen of the South" Dumfries was a prominent sea port until the coming of the railways. Our national poet, Robert Burns, lived, died and is buried here in the town alongside his wife Jean Armour and several of his children.

The Robert Burns Heritage Centre explores the years Robert Burns spent in the area. - Caerlaverock Castle (just outside Dumfries ) one of Scotland's greatest forts, is now a nature and wildfowl centre founded by Sir Peter Scott.

The area stretching from Scotland's south-western tip to the border with England is perhaps the most undiscovered in all the country.
